This day was lovely. We journeyed to Evergreen, my old stomping grounds, where I attended part of Kindergarten and first grade. Oh how I loved it there! It was so beautiful, full of nature around every turn. It wasn't rare to encounter a herd of elk in our front yard or a red tailed fox jogging down the side of the road. The snows were extreme but the scenery was even more so. I knew that once I got Jon out there he would fall in love. He did and I did all over again. Perhaps in the future we'll call the Colorado Rockies our home.
The girls were crowned queens at the local Burger King early that morning which set them up for a great day. We journeyed through the most amazing country, happening upon ancient mining towns and major gambling cities tucked away deep in canyons. Eventually we emerged from the winding roads and numerous tunnels into the lovely city of Evergreen. I perked up and was impressed at how well I remembered everything... My old school where I would tattle on the kids writing bad words on the slide. The salon where my mom my worked doing nails. I remember slamming my fingers in the car door in the parking lot and sneaking girl scout cookies from the cabinet while my mom was with a client. There was the house across from the rodeo grounds with the clicking grasshoppers. I recalled the baby horse that I would visit. There was the giant hill that I would zoom down on my pink scooter. As we made our way around I saw the spill way that I called a waterfall and the house where we were snowed in. It was definitely a trip down memory lane and I was happy to share it with Jon.
Our expedition led us to a favorite restaurant of my parents that sat low at the base of mountain peaks on a green golf course. The girls wondered around the putting greens until our food arrived. The air was cool and the soup and sandwich was exactly what we needed on a lazy day. The pool was a hit with the girls. I was nervous when we arrived on Sunday as the snow from the morning storm was still on the ground. But the pool was warm and the hot tubs steamy. The water came through for the girls and we enjoyed many leisurely hours soaking while observing the jagged mountain peaks. Little Reagan, our cautious little lady, gave us quite a fright on the last swimming excursion. I was selfishly lounging in the chair, beckoning the last of the close sun before our return, when the girls wondered down the deck to the other side of the pool. I closely watched them, perhaps from a bit of inspiration from the Spirit. Then the most frightening moment of my life... Reagan fell into the pool in deeper water. She was so far away and even though I was moving faster than I've ever moved before, it wasn't fast enough. She watched me with terror in her eyes, beckoning for me to help her. She kept her head above water until I jumped in and lifted her out. As I hugged her I realized how close we came to a serious tragedy. I can't recall being so grateful to our merciful Heavenly Father. There is no doubt in my mind that He preserved our family that day, that Reagan has a special purpose in life. I was ashamed that I had not been more attentive, that I had not called them closer to me. I don't think that I will ever recover from the horrible feeling. I am just SO GRATEFUL and HUMBLE for His preserving hand The best moments were our down times. The girls always enjoyed snacks and movie after a day of adventures. The windows of our condo were always open, the cool mountain air always dancing with the curtains. It was always so still and quiet and calming in there. Can we extend our stay for another week please?
Scary experience with Reagan! So glad you had your eyes open, saw the whole thing happen, and go there in time. It is so frightening how fast things can happen.
