Breckenridge Day 1

It was very early Sunday morning, 3:00am to be exact when Jon roused me from a glorious sleep. We gathered our slumbering little ladies and gently placed them in their carseats and by 4:31 we were full of gas, had our traveling treats at our fingertips and were cruising along the first leg of our 6 hour journey. The girls, for once, actually adhered to our plan and slept until we hit Grand Junction where we all enjoyed a nice breakfast at IHOP. The second half of our drive was breathtaking. The canyons were so green and lush, the sky bright and blue and clean, the river we followed was swollen and rough. And it just got better and better.

We arrived in the quaint little city of Breckenridge, Colorado just before noon. As we took a stroll down main street, I was enamored with the architecture and the style of the buildings. They were ornate and charming and colorful. We were high in the mountains, high enough that I felt as if I could touch the clouds that hung low around the bald mountain tops. The trees were tall and thick and everything was being touched by spring. And the air... it was so clean and crisp and smelled of pine and mud.

My parents graciously prepared a roast and potatoes for lunch, which was divine! We sat elbow to elbow at the simple table and feasted while admiring the mountain views. Meals in the mountains of Colorado simply tasted better.

After our bellies were full, our eyelids grew heavy and we retired to our cool rooms for a mid-afternoon snooze. It was short lived when we were rudely awakened by an alarm. At first I thought someone had set the alarm clock but then the alarm started to talk to us, telling us that an alarm in the building had been activated and that we needed to evacuate immediately. So, we gathered the terrified girls and with their little blankies in how, we made our way down the stairs into the chilly air, all a little dusty eyed. Eventually we were let back into our building after everything was secured. Turns out an oven in the activity center hadn't been used in a while and tricked the fire detector.

That evening, Grandma and Grandpa relieved Jon and me from our parental responsibilities and we took a stroll, just the two of us, around the town. It was perfect. And we both agreed that we were so grateful to be there to have time together as a family and to experience this new and fascinating place.
